An annotated bibliography is a written literature review of a topic, in this case the anthropology of a small-scale culture. Each page of the review will be a summary of a single source, including a reference listing in APA format. List the source first, then provide a summary on the rest of that page. Your summary should give pertinent details relating the source, and should include a short discussion of why the source is important to the class material for ANTH 1100. In addition, you must print out the first page of each source and attach these pages to the assignment. Your annotated bibliography will review the anthropological literature which outlines the study of a small scale culture. Many ethnographic sources are quite old; you should avoid these and rely on modern sources. This means if most of your sources are from before the 1980s, you will not do very well. Your review must be based on a minimum of six strong, academic sources, at least four of which must be primary ethnographies.. Anything less than this will seriously impact your mark on the assignment. Stay away from encyclopaedias, newspapers, National Geographic, non-research films, uncredited (no author) websites (especially travel websites), Wikipedia, and magazines. You will lose marks for using inappropriate sources like these. A primary ethnography is something written by a researcher who directly studied a culture or subculture (an example is the No Direction Home ethnography). Your textbook is an example of a secondary source, as it is based not directly on the authors’ research, but upon research done by other anthropologists. Information from your sources needs to be paraphrased. This means that you cannot directly use someone else’s language, unless you clearly format that writing as a quotation. It may be difficult to find reference material for some of these cultures. This is your responsibility and is part of the assignment.
