Topic 1: Correctional Goals of Community-Based Sanctions What are the primary goals of community-based sanctions? What criteria are used to determine the effectiveness of these approaches? Topic 2: The History of Probation What are the strengths and weaknesses of probation today? Consider philosophies currently and formerly used. Justify your reasoning. Topic 3: Changing Concepts of Supervision How has the concept of supervision changed over the past century? What factors have brought about these changes? Topic 4: The Classification Process and The Effectiveness of Probation Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the classification process and the impact on community corrections. Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages? Explain your reasons. Topic 5: Recidivism Discuss the effectiveness of probation in terms of recidivism; and in comparison to other criminal justice interventions. Topic 6: Current Topics Please research some current events related to the course topics covered in Units 14 and post at least two of these events to the Discussion Board. Within your posting, describe how your chosen items tie to the course so far. You may use the Kaplan Library or any other outside resource for your research. Be sure to use proper citation. Please remember to review your fellow students” postings and respond to at least three events posting throughout the week. Topic 7: Intermediate Sanctions and Traditional Incarceration Choose one of the programs addressed in this unit and explain how it differs from other correctional sanctions and traditional incarceration. Topic 9: Types of Juvenile Probation and Parole Identify and discuss the different types of juvenile probation and parole. Topic 10: Conviction and The Loss of Civil and Political Rights Identify and discuss the loss of civil and political rights after conviction Topic 11: Reflect and Discuss Now that you have completed this course, reflect on the outcomes as well as your personal goals for the course. This is not intended to be a mere recap of the course. The emphasis here is what you have personally learned and how it will affect your professional goals. Discussing what you have learned during the term will not only help you better process the information, but will help you enhance each other”s learning experience.
