Edge and John Randall Groves)1 Several times during his experiences, Dax requested that treatment be stopped, and that he be allowed to die. Do you believe Dax was competent (fit to make his own decisions) all these various times he made these requests? (Look in your textbook on pages 154-155 to review questions to ask to determine if someone is competent.) 2 Autonomy is a health care principle meaning the ability of someone to make his or her own decisions, of being self-directed. Paternalism is doing good for someone while limiting that person’s autonomy (or not doing what they request/want) (Paternalism is NOT a health care principle). Keeping both these ideas in mind, as well as the health care principles of beneficence (doing good) and non-maleficence (not doing harm), answer the following question: If you were one of Dax’s doctors, would you have continued his treatment after he asked you not to? 3 Describe the different values (things, or ideas, or principles thought to be very important) held by Dax, his mother, the family lawyer, and his doctors that motivated each to make the decisions that they did. 4 At the end of the documentary, Dax gives his thoughts on the whole experience and whether he would respond differently knowing how things turned out for him.
