This assignment will help prepare students for the Research Essay that will be submitted
later on in the term. It should be written on the same topic that you anticipate writing
your Research Essay on. The list of topics is available on blackboard. Students are free to

The Essay Preparation Assignment”which should be 500-750 words in length”should
consist of two components. First, a topic overview of approximately 250 words in which

when it happened, what happened, who was involved, etc.”and provide a preliminary
argument, or thesis, that explains which aspect of your topic you anticipate focusing on in
the Research Essay. You will not be required to explore the same thesis for the Research
Essay, if it turns out you would like to focus on another aspect of your topic for that
assignment.
The second component is an Annotated Bibliography in which you examine three
scholarly sources on your topic. One of these sources must be a scholarly monograph, or
book, while another must be a scholarly journal article. The third source can be either an
academic monograph or a scholarly journal article. Each of the bibliography entries
should be between 150 and 250 words in length and should explain what the source is
about and how it will benefit your Research Essay. Each entry should begin by providing
citation information on the source you will be writing about that conforms to the Chicago
Manual of Style (see link on blackboard for specifics), and should provide specific
examples drawn from the source along with detailed analysis expressed in your own
words. Additionally, the assignment should be typed, stapled, and double-spaced. A title
page is not required, although if you choose not to include one, be sure to provide your
name, the course code, and the instructors name at the top of the first page.
