Who were the Loyalists, and what was their most important contribution to pre- Confederation Canada?

 This assignment gives students an opportunity to engage in independent scholarly
research, and develop a persuasive main argument based on their findings. Essay topics
will be chosen from a wide-ranging list available on blackboard. In preparing the essays,
students should consult at least four scholarly sources (including academic books, or
monographs, and academic journal articles). Information on how to find helpful sources
will be provided. The essays should be 1500-1750 words in length, and should be given a
creative title that reflects their content. Students should also be sure to provide brief
definitions of key terms (and by key terms I mean words/concepts/etc. that would be
unfamiliar to a reader with little-to-no knowledge of Canadian history). Also, they should
avoid using numerous and/or lengthy quotes from secondary sources. Instead, aim to
paraphrase what the authors have said, and integrate their ideas into your essay.
Footnotes should be provided throughout your essay to make clear where youve
obtained your information. A bibliography referring to all of the sources youve included
for the essay”not just the ones that appear in your foot/endnotes”should be included on
a separate sheet of paper at the end of the assignment.
